How to become and engineer?

I'm wanting to become a biomedical engineer specifically a neural engineer. And even more specifically, I would like to research brain computer interfacing or neuroprosthetics. I understand that typically this requires a graduate degree, but is it AT ALL possible to go into this field without a grad degree? Possibly if one were to get into research instead of attending grad school?
